Enter CHICOS: The California High School Cosmic Ray Observatory
CHICOS uses detectors salvaged from LANL.
A pair of detectors, with GPS antenna and data computer is placed in
each participating LA High School.
The goal is to build a ground array covering the entire LA basin, an area of over
1000 sq. km.
This ground array detects secondary particles from cosmic ray air showers.
By covering a larger area than previous experiments, and coming into operation
quickly, CHICOS aims to gather enough data on UHECRs to obtain meaningful statistics.
