When a cosmic ray comes from outer space, and hits the atmosphere, it
produces a conically shaped shower of secondary particles. The lower corner ( C
) hits first, the middle ( B ) hits
next and the upper edge ( A) hits last.
By timing the arrival of the parts of the planar conical front, the angle which
the cone’s line of symmetry makes with the horizon can be determined.
