CHICOS: Live Muon Half-Life Data

Data on this page has been taken by the muon half-life monitor in the Kellogg Lab at Caltech. Background material for working with this data is available on the CHICOS Classroom Activities web site.

[Note: The monitor has periodic downtime due to other work going on in the CHICOS lab. To check how recently data has been recorded, check the update log. (Be sure to hit "Refresh" in your browser if you have already checked the update log recently.)]

The muon half-life monitor detects muons which decay inside a particular CHICOS shmoo located in the Kellogg lab at Caltech. The time for each muon to decay is recorded (in nanoseconds) in a data file and posted to this web site.

Each file contains 10 minutes of data accumulation. Generally around 400 muon decay events are detected and recorded in 10 minutes.

Select and copy data from a file to import into the Excel worksheet provided. Data from multiple files can be imported into a single worksheet.
